Hamleys posts loss for 2017

Hamleys has posted a £12 million loss for the year to 31st December 2017 along with a drop of 2.5 per cent in revenues which came in at £66.3 million. The toy specialist had withdrawn from Denmark, Norway and Sweden, closed six stores and four franchises, leaving it with 29 stores and 100 franchise units.

CEO Ralph Cunningham commented: “Last year was one of the most challenging years in UK retail history. Hamleys was not immune to the impact of Brexit uncertainty, macro-economic pressures, a general erosion in UK consumer confidence and falling customer footfall due to the threat of terrorism.

News has been somewhat more upbeat from toy retailing competitor The Entertainer.
