J Sainsbury plc has successful completed its acquisition of Home Retail Group plc – the owner of Argos and Habitat. Mike Coupe, chief executive of Sainsbury’s said “We are delighted our acquisition of Home Retail Group is now complete. The combination of Sainsbury’s and Home Retail Group creates one of the UK’s largest food and non-food retailers, offering customers over 90,000 products in over 2,000 stores and across market leading digital channels, employing 195,000 colleagues across the UK and Ireland.”
The business will now roll out Argos digital stores with Sainsbury’s supermarkets. 30 will open in time for Christmas 2016. It will also open five mini Habitat stores with Sainsbury’s stores enabling customers to shop across three high street brands in one store. The Argos digital stores will offer customers a choice to either buy instantly in-store via tablets, or to reserve online for easy same-day collection. Argos digital stores will occupy between 1,000 and 5000 sq.ft. whereas the Habitat stores will offer around 600 products from between 1400 and 2000 sq.ft..
