Asda appoints new CIO to oversee Walmart split

Asda has appointed Carl Dawson as its new chief information officer to support the separation from Walmart and oversee the retailer’s transition from its former US owner’s IT systems.

Dawson (left) joins the company next month from Marks & Spencer, where he has spent the last six years in the same role managing M&S’ digital transformation programmes.

Anthony Hemmerdinger, Asda’s chief operating officer, said: “We are delighted to welcome Carl to Asda as chief information officer. Carl has strong retail and digital experience having previously worked at Tesco, Shop Direct and Thomas Cook and this experience and expertise will be invaluable to us as we navigate our separation from our Walmart systems.”

Dawson takes over from interim CIO Anna Barsby, who joined Asda on a fixed term basis to lead its technology function after former CIO Phil Tenney left the business in December.

Barsby is to continue her work supporting the delivery of Asda’s broader separation, reporting to chief supply chain officer Mark Simpson.
