“John Lewis has promised to match any
discounting on the high street in the run-up to Christmas,”
reports the Financial Times, “as middle England’s
favourite department store reported a sharp drop in trade
following a ‘disappointing’ week.”

Wallgate Group has put its offprice Hitchens
retail chain into administration, according to Crain’s Manchester Business, but it will
keep two of the 13 stores open, along with the Hot Deals
and Best Price Trading website. The company warned,
however, that if it doesn’t raise an additional £1 million
by the end of November, it may have to make additional cutbacks.
