“John Lewis has promised to match any
discounting on the high street in the run-up to Christmas,”
reports the Financial Times, “as middle England’s
favourite department store reported a sharp drop in trade
following a ‘disappointing’ week.”

“Woolworths’ lenders call in restructuring
experts from Deloitte,” reports The Independent.

Wallgate Group has put its offprice Hitchens
retail chain into administration, according to Crain’s Manchester Business, but it will
keep two of the 13 stores open, along with the Hot Deals
and Best Price Trading website. The company warned,
however, that if it doesn’t raise an additional £1 million
by the end of November, it may have to make additional cutbacks.

Graham and Green, Lombok, John Lewis, Laura Ashley, Oli
and Toast are among the retailers recommended in
The Times article “How to outfit your
home on the cheap”.

The Guardian visits the home of Stencil
Library owners Helen Morris and Michael Chippendale. As you
might expect, there’s not a bare surface in the house.

“I have an image of my weekend self looking like
something from the Toast catalogue,” declares one of
the women interviewed by The Telegraph for an article on weekend
dressing. Yet Toast isn’t among the fashion retailers cited as
a good source for weekend apparel.
