Shein’s proposed LSE listing hits road-block

Shein which has plans to float in London early next year has come under the scrutiny of the Government’s anti-slavery commissioner as well as having drawn the attention of a Uyghur campaign group which is challenging the online giant.

This follows the well-documented allegations that Shein and its suppliers use forced labour to produce the cheap fashion lines which has enabled an undercutting of ethical competitors – and that the exploitation of  Uyghurs continues unabated. The minority ethnic group is said to be forced to work in the country’s Xinjiang region which produces cotton, as well as in sweatshops which make up garments. There have also been reports of child labour abuses in the Shein supply chain.

It will be January before MPs prepare to quiz Shein representatives over these concerns.
