ASDA has launched a fresh assault on the £9bn home
furnishings market, taking on Tesco Direct and Argos, in its
latest online venture. The supermarket has confirmed it is aiming
to create a £500m-a-year business and said it is determined
to mount a serious challenge to traditional retailers. The George
furniture range has already been successfully trialled in seven
Asda Living stores and 26 Asda superstores across the UK. It also
aims to capture a slice of the online electrical market which is
currently worth £1.9bn, and growing at a rate of 30 per cent
each year. ASDA is aiming to capture a 5 per cent stake by 2012.
