News roundup—12th June 2008

First-quarter sales at Argos were flat, which was
better than the 2-3 per cent like-for-like decline that had been
expected. But parent company Home Retail Group’s other
brand, Homebase suffered a 12 per cent decline in sales,
reports the Press Association.

Cataloguer/retailer Next is no stranger to copyright
infringement lawsuits; earlier this month, for instance, it
sued Asda for allegedly copying some of
its apparel designs.
But now Next is the one being
challenged, by no less an adversary than the Ministry of
Defence. The MoD claims that Next has no right to use the RAF
roundel on a duvet cover, according to The Guardian.

The website outages at Amazon on 6th June and 9th June
have been well reported. Receiving less attention,
however, was another site crash on 6th June: that of
Oxfam’s online charity shop. As Professional Fundraising puts it,
“Oxfam’s online shop froze and crashed soon after a
designer handbag sale began, as it was unable to cope with
receiving up to 6,000 hits per minute as hoards of
bargain-hungry consumers descended upon their prey.”
