News roundup—N Brown, ASOS & more

N Brown is expanding overseas. The multititle mailer plans to enter the German market next spring with a version of its Simply Be women’s apparel catalogue, reports The Times.

In other N Brown news, a shareholder advisory group is recommending that shareholders vote against the appointment of Lord Alliance of Manchester as chairman and two other directors at the company’s annual general meeting on Thursday, according to The Telegraph.

The economic downturn hasn’t hit ASOS yet. For the fiscal year ended 31st March, revenue was £81.0 million, up 90 per cent on the previous year. Pretax profit was a record £8.2 million, up from £3.0 million. And for the first quarter of the current fiscal year,
the fashion merchant enjoyed year-on-year sales growth of 95 per cent.

Even before Asos announced its impressive financials, The Independent was waxing enthusiastic about the web and print cataloguer–or as the headline describes it, “The celeb-alike fashion site that’s grabbing the ‘Heat’ generation”.

“Claims and descriptions of plants sold in mail-order catalogues or online that seem too good to be true probably are,” according to a report from Which?. Not all the news was damning: Thompson and Morgan was among the merchants whose products did live up to their claims.

What will the liberalisation of website domain names, announced last week, mean to you? The Times explains.

The company formerly known as Littlewoods Shop Direct Group–now simply Shop Direct Group–is number 19 on The Times’ list of the 100 largest private companies in the UK, with sales of £1,766 million.
