News roundup—12th May 2009

April’s like-for-like sales on the high street rose 4.6
per cent, according to British Retail Consortium figures cited by
The Times. That’s the highest increase in
three years. And direct sales rose by an even greater
percentage, 12.5 per cent. But a KPMG analyst noted that the
figures were boosted in part by Easter’s falling in April this
year.

In what seems to be an ideal partnership, cataloguer
Craghoppers, which specialises in travel apparel and
accessories, has opened a concession in the flagship Covent
Garden store of Stanfords, a retailer of travel books and
maps.

Troubled German retailer Arcandor is likely to apply
for state aid soon, according to Reuters. It has postponed reporting of its
half-year results by more than two weeks, to 29th May,
“due to the restructuring of the Group, the recently
published consolidation programme and the ongoing financing
negotiations”, according to a statement. Arcandor’s UK
catalogues include fashion titles Afibel and Peter
Hahn.
