More glad holiday-sales tidings, from M and M Direct:
The fashion discounter posted a 31 per cent rise in year-on-year
sales for the 10 weeks ended 4th January. Online orders soared 57
percent and the cataloguer had its first-ever £1
million-plus day, on 8th December.
For the seven weeks to 10th January, Tesco Direct and
Tesco.com reaped sales of £273 million, up 18 per cent from
the previous year. UK like-for-like sales, excluding petrol, for
the supermarket giant rose 2.5 per cent. Total worldwide sales
increased 11.6 per cent.
Virgin has sold its Virgin Vie at Home personal-care
catalogue business to its management team, according to
M&A Deals.
Coopers of Stortford, a cataloguer/retailer of home
goods, has acquired local retailer Margaret Kay Flowers and
Wine, reports the Hertfordshire Mercury.
Fashion cataloguer/retailer White Stuff raised more
than £150,000 for charity in December by asking customers to
donate their 2.5 per cent VAT savings on purchases rather than
keep the change themselves, according to The Times.

The week got off to a rocky start for DSG
International, which is expected to post disappointing sales
figures later this week. On Monday the websites for two of its
brands, Dixons and PC World, were down all day due
to “overnight maintenance issues,” according to
PC Pro.
From a press release from industrial union Unite: “The
decision by home retailer Argos to close its Trafford Park
distribution site with the loss of over 200 jobs has been
condemned [Monday] by Unite, the UK’s biggest union. In further
insult to members, the site on which they work is to be
redeveloped into a museum of industrial heritage.”
