The Communication Workers Union is set to begin three days of
staggered 24-hour nationwide strikes against Royal Mail next
Thursday, 22nd October. This, according to The Telegraph, is in addition to planned
work stoppages in London today.
Meanwhile, the Centre for Economics and Business Research
(CEBR) said that a Royal Mail strike could cost the UK economy
as much as £1.5 billion, reports The Scotsman. The CEBR expects online
merchants to be the hardest hit, losing as much as £220
million, because of consumer concerns about the delivery of
orders.
Half-year sales at N Brown Group rose 4.9
per cent, to £338.7 million for the six months ended 29th
August. Group profit before tax and adjustments rose 13 per cent,
to £14.8 million. Ecommerce sales grew 21 per cent, to
£128 million. N Brown’s titles include Simply
Be and Premier Man.
September like-for-like retail sales rose 2.8 per cent from
last year, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC).
Although that’s the highest year-on-year growth since April, the
September figure is “against comparisons with collapsing
sales a year earlier at the height of the financial
crisis,” notes the Press Association. September’s mail order
and online sales rose 11.9 per cent on last year.
