News roundup—4th June 2009

German conglomerate Arcandor is unlikely to get bailed
out by the German government, according to Financial Times. The parent company of
catalogue division Primondo and travel firm Thomas Cook
applied for a €200 million credit line and €650
million in state guarantees “to help it head off the
threat of insolvency when a loan is due for refinancing on June
12”.

Citing statistics from a recent Verdict Research report,
BusinessWeek notes that “wealthier
customers are shopping more online for convenience, while
cash-strapped buyers are returning to discount stores to avoid
shipping fees”. When it comes to big-ticket items,
however, even less-affluent consumers are shopping online,
because of the lower prices.

Wedding supplies cataloguer Confetti and home decor
merchant Graham & Green are cited in a Telegraph article on how to reduce wedding
expenses.
