News roundup—8th October 2008

The credit crunch isn’t keeping people from their sweets:
Chocolatier Thorntons reported a 6.4 per cent rise in sales
for its fiscal first quarter, to £45.7 million for the 14
weeks ended 4th October. Catalogue and web sales increased by 7.6
per cent, but sales within the Thorntons Direct unit rose a more
modest 0.7 per cent, because of a decline in corporate sales,
which are included in that division.

Office supplies cataloguer Viking Direct has come
under fire for shipping tiny items in boxes that are up to 500
times larger than necessary reports the Northampton Chronicle & Echo–which also
has a snicker-inducing photo of one such package.

Cosmetics direct marketer Avon has been forced to
withdraw adverts for one of its skincare products, as according
to The Telegraph, the Advertising Standards
Authority ruled that the company’s claims for the cream were not
effectively proven.
