News roundup–Apple, Ted Baker, White Stuff

RIP Steve Jobs. The visionary leader of technology firm
Apple has died aged 56. A statement from Apple’s
board of directors says his “brilliance, passion and energy
were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve
all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of
Steve.” Jobs stepped down as chief executive of Apple in
August due to health reasons. His successor, Tim Cook, commented,
“No words can adequately express our sadness at Steve’s
death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. We
will honour his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the
work he loved so much.”

Fashion retailer New Look has launched a click
and collect service. The service allows customers to have their
orders delivered to a UK New Look store of their choice for
collection. New Look aims to deliver to stores within 3 to 5 days
of the order being placed online. The service is currently not
available for customers shopping through New Look’s mobile
site.

Bucking the retail gloom, fashion retailer Ted
Baker
reported that group revenue in the 28 weeks ended
13th August rose 16.6 percent from £88.1 million to
£102.8 million. The company also experience a double-digit
increase in pretax profits from £7.5 million to £8.5
million.

The news wasn’t so rosy from automotive and cycling accessories
retailer Halfords. In the first half, overall
retail sales declined by 1.2 percent and by 1.9 percent on a
like-for-like basis. Group profit before tax for the first half
is expected to be in the range of £53 to £55 million.

Apparel retailer White Stuff will open its first
store in Copenhagen, Denmark next month and is actively
recruiting staff for its store. White first entered the
Scandinavian market in 2008 through a wholesale offering.
