News roundup–Argos, Homebase, Halfords, and Clothkits

Total sales at Argos declined 5.2 per cent to
£889 million, in the 13 weeks to 29th May. At sister company
Homebase sales dipped 1.4 per cent to £459
million. In a statement, chief executive Terry Duddy said the
quarter was “difficult in terms of consumers’ willingness
to spend”.

Revenue at leisure and automotive accessories retailer
Halfords is up 4.6 per cent to £831.6
million, for the 52 weeks to 2nd April. Multichannel sales were
up 34 per cent and now account for 6 per cent of total
revenue.

The Yorkshire Business Desk reports that fashion
etailer ASOS is creating up to 1,000 jobs in the
Barnsley area following the announcement that it was setting up a
530,000 sq ft distribution centre in the town.

The Telegraph talks to Kay Mawer, owner of
Clothkits, about her mail order home-sewing
business. Now in its third year, Mawer’s company has an annual
turnover of £450,000, and a customer base spanning Britain,
Canada, Singapore, Denmark, and Greece.

Matthew Conridge was named Devon’s young entrepreneur of the year
at the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) Devon Business Awards
2010, reports the Exeter Express & Echo. Conridge founded
outdoor leisure gear retailer Mamka-which trades
online as Togga and Outdoor Leisure
Direct-four years ago.
