ASOS.com has poached Topshop buying director Caren Downie to head its women’s apparel team, says The Times. Among her duties will be overseeing the cataloguer’s addition of close to 3,000 product lines this year. Another Topshop exec, Jane Shepherdson, left last month to join rival retailer Whistles.

Woolworths is using a viral game, a Facebook application and email to support its latest Big Red Book catalogue and gain prospect information for its database, reports NetImperative.

The questionable success of the OfficeMax campaign could tie in with why, as The Financial Times reports, “just 18 per cent of… UK businesses… believed their brands must engage urgently with social media if they were to avoid falling behind the market”. That compares with nearly 50 per cent of US firms.

“Consumer confidence in Britain has fallen to its lowest level in nine years in spite of the two recent interest rate cuts from the Bank of England,” reports The Guardian.
