Electronics distributor Premier Farnell has
agreed a multimillion-pound deal with Sony UK Technology
Centre (UKTec) to manufacture the Raspberry Pi computer
in the UK for the first time. Currently, the innovative
credit-card sized device is produced in China, but thanks to this
partnership, 30 new jobs will be created in Sony’s technology
centre in Pencoed, Wales. Premier Farnell has been selling the
Raspberry Pi since February this year through its brands
Farnell element14 in Europe, Newark
element14 in North America and element14 in Asia
Pacific, and more recently through subsidiaries
CPC in the UK and MCM
Electronics in the US.

Amazon will create some 2,000 new jobs over the
next two years with the opening of three more distribution
centres writes the Independent. The online giant announced the
launch of the new Kindle Fire–which it boasts “isn’t just
the best tablet for the price, it’s the best tablet”–last
night. The next generation device, dubbed Kindle Fire HD,
includes new Amazon-exclusive features and will be available in
the UK from October, with the 16gb, 7-inch version priced at
£159. In related news, Amazon.com has launched its Amazon
Appstore in the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain, giving
European customers access to Amazon’s selection of Android apps
with via their smartphones and tablets.

Toy retailer Toys R Us reported a decline in net
sales of 3.6 per cent in the second quarter to $2.6 billion, while
net losses widened from £34 million in the prior year to $36
million. Within the international segment, which includes the UK,
the largest decline was in Europe reflecting the impact of the
ongoing challenging economic environment. Partially offsetting
the sluggish European performance was a sales increase in new
locations including stores in Greater China and Southeast
Asia.

US-based eCommerce fulfilment provider Webgistix
Corporation is expanding its operations through the opening of
distribution centres in the UK and in Switzerland. The move is
part of Webgistix’s aim of providing its clients with a platform
for cost-effective deliveries into UK and across the European
Union.

Compton & Woodhouse, the collectibles marketer
acquired out of
administration in 2011
, is relaunching its websites on the
Magento platform. It is working with eCommerce agency Screen
Pages.

Oakfurnitureland.co.uk, a retailer of solid
hardwood furniture, has confirmed it will open its 22nd showroom,
in Stockton, on Saturday, 8th September. The opening marks
Oakfurnitureland’s 14th new showroom in the last 12 months.
