Ideal Shopping Direct, the TV shopping and online retailer is back in the black. In the year to 3rd January, the company delivered underlying pretax profit of £1.3 million compared with a £4 million loss in 2008. Sales are also on the increase, up 9.2 per cent to £103.3 million. The new fiscal year has started well too, with sales up 17.5 per cent in the first 10 weeks over the same period in 2009.

Halfords is pulling out from its loss-making operations in eastern Europe. The auto-accessories retailer confirmed its intention to close, this summer, its seven stores trading in the Czech Republic and Poland. In the UK and Ireland, meanwhile, Halfords saw revenues increase 1.3 per cent with like-for-like sales 0.8 per cent higher than the previous year in the 11 weeks to 19th March.
