News roundup–new recruits at Celtic Sheepskin, Avon and Karen Millen, more

Monique Louis, formerly product director at Lands’ End UK
and Northern Europe has joined Cornwall-based apparel
cataloguer Celtic Sheepskin as managing
director.

Cycling and accessories retailer Chain Reaction
Cycles will create 30 new jobs in the coming year as it
focuses on bolstering its commercial department and its product,
eCommerce and marketing divisions, reports the Belfast Telegraph.

Cosmetics and beauty products etailer Feelunique
has denied reports that it’s gearing up to sell the business.
Chief executive Aaron Chatterley told Direct Commerce
the company has received offers in the past, but he is not
currently in talks.

In more news from the beauty sector, Avon has
announced the appointment of Sheri McCoy as its new chief
executive officer, effective 23rd April. She succeeds Andrea
Jung, who becomes the company’s executive chairman. McCoy joins
from Johnson & Johnson, where she held the post
of vice chairman of the executive committee, with responsibility
for the pharmaceutical and consumer business segments.

Amazon is facing an inquiry by HMRC into to
establish whether it has paid enough corporation tax on sales in
the UK. The Mail reports that Amazon is alleged not to
have paid corporate tax on the profits from £3.3 billion
sales last year and up to £10.3 billion since 2009.

Facebook announced it is buying photo-sharing
app Instagram for $1 billion. A Guardian blog notes the news hasn’t gone down
well with Instagram’s fan community.

Karen Millen has appointed former Long
Tall Sally chief executive Sian Hession to a new role as
global retail operations director. Her remit includes
spearheading a new strategic initiative to extend the Karen
Millen brand globally, including opening stores in London, New
York, Los Angeles and Moscow as well as developing the brand’s
website. She reports to managing director Gemma
Metheringham

Swedish apparel brand Gudrun Sjoden has opened
its first UK store. The flagship store, in Covent Garden, opened
on 30th March.
