Confectioner Thorntons reported
“significantly improved profitability” for the 28
weeks to 9th January. Pretax profit rose 24.6 per cent from
£7.3 million in 2008 to £9.1 million. The improvement
was attributed to reduced levels of discounting in-store and
more-profitable corporate sales. Overall sales, however, dipped
0.7 per cent to £127.4 million.

Online marketplace eBay is planning to launch in
six European countries including Russia and Greece by the end of
March according to Reuters. The new websites will allow
customers to shop through eBay in their native languages.

Department store House of Fraser is asking for
restrictions on its lending terms relaxed so that it can afford
to spend more cash on stock for its online and high street
business, reports the Telegraph.

Huddersfield-based 247 Blinds, an online
retailer of blinds and curtains is aiming to grow the business
by 45 per cent by March 2011, predicting a turnover of £12
million next year. According to the Yorkshire Business Desk, 247 Blinds currently
sells 20,000 blinds a month, and has a 22 per cent share of the
market.

Fashion etailer ASOS has teamed up with magazine
publisher Bauer and Diet Coke to launch the Love It Light
campaign, reports FoodBev.com.
