John Lewis is opening a second distribution centre at Magna
Park in Milton Keynes to fulfil orders from its online business and to its 39
UK stores. The retailer has signed a 30-year lease on the 675,000 sq-ft
warehouse, which will be situated adjacent to its existing distribution centre.
Operations will be relocated from the current site at Park Royal in north
London, which will impact up to 560 jobs. The retailer says 200 new jobs will
be created at a new smaller delivery hub in London, as well as 450 jobs in
Milton Keynes.
The move is part of the John Lewis’s plans for improvements
in productivity, availability and customer service as well as supporting its
expansion plans. The retailer has announced it is investing £32 million to fund
an extensive refurbishment programme in four shops this year, including its
flagship department store on London’s Oxford Street. A further £25 million is
earmarked for other, smaller investments across its store estate before 2014.
