Tesco cuts jobs

Tesco cuts jobs

As widely expected, and in line with current market conditions, Tesco has now confirmed that it is likely to place 9,000 jobs at risk due to planned closures of fresh food service counters in about 90 of its larger stores along with other changes, including the closure of staff canteens. The retailer says it will endeavour to redeploy a significant number of affected staff but that around half could be made redundant.

Jason Tarry, Tesco chief executive for the UK and Ireland, said: “In our four years of turnaround we’ve made good progress, but the market is challenging and we need to continually adapt to remain competitive and respond to how customers want to shop.” Adding: “We’re making changes to our UK stores and head office to simplify what we do and how we do it, so we’re better able to meet the needs of our customers. This will impact some of our colleagues and our commitment is to minimise this as much as possible and support our colleagues throughout.”
