Cute headline of the day, courtesy of The Times: “Laura Ashley’s
figures flattered by web sales”. Pretax profits for the
26 weeks to 26th July were £4.5 million, up 13 per cent
from the first half of last year. Total half-year sales for the
retailer/cataloguer rose 5.5 per cent, to £120.2 million,
with web sales exceeding traditional mail order sales for the
first time. Overall, direct sales rose 8.6 per cent from the
same period last year.
“Park Group, the Christmas hamper and vouchers
group, shrugged off the credit crunch as its customers’ deposits
rose by a third,” reports the Financial Times.
According to The Telegraph, 38 per cent of executives at
midsize and large companies have talked of moving offshore to
reduce their tax bill.
In its “Fashion Q&A” column, The Times recommends Hush and The
White Company for toasty pyjamas.
