News roundup—Asda kills catalogue, Christmas boosts Cotton Traders

That didn’t last long: Asda has suspended its
twice-a-year print catalogue, according to PrintWeek, to focus on digital marketing of
its direct offer. The supermarket chain only launched the
big-book catalogue in October 2008.

Apparel cataloguer/retailer Cotton Traders
enjoyed a 31 percent jump in like-for-like sales between 1st
December and Boxing Day 2009 compared with the previous year, the
Manchester Evening News reports. The surge
compensated for a 20 percent plummet in like-for-likes in
September and October due to the unseasonably warm weather and
the postal strikes. The company expects revenue for the year to
31st January to hit £70 million, an 11 percent lift from the
previous year, with underlying profits of approximately £4.3
million, a 5 percent.

Online Christmas Day 2009 sales in the UK rose 29 percent from
those of 2008, to £132 million, according to the Interactive
Media in Research Group (IMRG). Christmas Eve sales jumped 68
percent, to £181 million.
