Brits biggest spenders in Europe


Brits are Europe’s most prolific online spenders, according to a
new study from the Centre for Retail Research (CRR), commissioned
by comparison website Kelkoo. The research notes that UK consumers spent
£38 billion ($59.4 billion) online in 2009, or an average of
£1,102 ($1,723) per shopper. Germans came second, spending
£29.7 billion ($46.4 billion) online last year. The French
were third, spending £22 billion ($34.3 billion).

For 2010, the research predicts that as the most mature European
online market, UK ecommerce sales will grow by £4.7 billion
($7.35 billion) or 12.4 percent. In the rest of Europe online
sales are forecast to grow by 19.6 percent, or £25.1
billion, to £152.8 billion ($239.2 billion), with
significant growth spurts in Poland (36 percent), France (31
percent), and Spain (25 percent). The forecast, says the report’s
authors, is based on a general continuation of current online
sales trends, “alongside the improving economic fortunes of
most countries throughout Europe”.
