News roundup–ASOS appoints former Amazon UK boss as chairman, New Look grows profits, more

David McBride, the former managing director of Amazon UK, is joining online apparel retailer ASOS as chairman. He succeeds Lord Waheed Alli, who has been with the company for 12 years. Chief executive Nick Robertson said McBride was joining the business “at an
exciting time” as it continues to internationalise and move towards its target of £1 billion turnover.

New Look shrugged off the economic gloom with a profits increase of 30 per cent in the year to August 2012. The Telegraph writes that New Look’s EBITDA in its last fiscal year was up from £47 million to £61.1 million. Because of the increase, New Look’s private equity owners will be allowed to buy back the controversial payment-in-kind (PIK) note, helping to reduce New Look’s debt burden.

Also from the Telegraph, Sir Roger Moore has called for a boycott of upscale department store Fortnum & Mason until the retailer stops selling foie gras.

International Dance Supplies’ systems manager Jillian Bamsey has won a place on the United Kingdom Trade and Investment (UKTI) Scholarship Programme “Competing and Winning in the US Market”. She was selected from more than 70 applicants and joins a group of just 19 successful candidates. The experience gained on the course will further provide the dancewear specialist with the tools to continue its expansion into the US, where the company has been active for the past four years.
