News roundup–Management buys stake in Gro Company, Stanley Gibbons buys Benham, more


The management team of The Gro Company, the
company behind the Grobaby sleeping bags, has bought a
“significant stake” in the company. The company’s
founders and owners, Rob and Ouvrielle Holmes, retain a majority
shareholding. The buy-in was conducted by momentum corporate
finance.

Stanley Gibbons, the stamp and collectibles
specialist, has acquired Benham from
multicatalogue group Flying Brands for £1.5
million. The proceeds of the sale, said Flying Brands’ chief
executive Stephen Cook in a statement, will go towards
strengthening the company’s core titles including
Gardening Direct and Flying
Flowers
.
Stanley Gibbons’ chief executive Mike Hall told the City that the
acquisition will allow the company to branch out into new revenue
streams and “add specialist skills in volume mail order,
collector club management and in-house design”.
Stanley Gibbons plans to develop the Benham website and
cross-sell its products online. It also intends to promote and
distribute selected Benham products in China.

The Financial Times reports that
Tesco is to expand its online shopping operation
into China, the Czech Republic and Poland. The news comes as
Philip Clarke prepares to take over as the supermarket’s chief
executive when Sir Terry Leahy retires next year.

Dell‘s chief marketing officer Erin Mulligan
Nelson is to leave the company to join social-commerce provider
Bazaarvoice in a similar position.
