News roundup–TUC backs plans to fight Royal Mail privatisation, more


The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is backing a campaign by the
Communication Workers Union (CWU) to fight the plans to privatise
Royal Mail. The Guardian reports that at the TUC conference
in Manchester, unions “unanimously backed” an
emergency motion from the CWU warning of post office closures and
the end of the universal postal service.

Next chief executive Simon Wolfson told This Is Money that consumers can expect
clothing prices to rise 5 to 8 percent after a failed harvest in
India pushed cotton prices up 45 percent. A separate article in
the Independent says that the days of cheap
“fast fashion” are numbered as the cost of clothing
is likely to rise due in part to the bad harvest as well as the
cheap sterling (which makes buying clothes in dollars more
expensive) and an imminent VAT rise.
